This day have been celebrated since 2002 (1), and this year will be the 19th time that World Physical Day is celebrated. This year’s theme is: Every step counts! (2)
With this theme, we are encouraged to do a physical activity, for at least 30 minutes every day. This can be any physical activity. The WHO have published a document with guidelines with regards to how much activity each age group should be doing, each day (3). They furthermore states the following:
“The Global Recommendations on Physical Activity for Health are relevant for the following health outcomes: Cardio respiratory health (coronary heart disease, cardiovascular disease, stroke and hypertension). Metabolic health (diabetes and obesity). Musculoskeletal health (bone health, osteoporosis). Cancer (breast and colon cancer). Functional health and prevention of falls. Depression.”
Physical activity ideas
At home, you can do a chair workout for 30 minutes (which I as personal trainer can supply to you in video format as well. Email me at askfitness@marleenspersonaltraining.co.za). You can choose a Pilates workout (contact me if you need help within this regards as well), or walk around your home for 30 minutes.
Whatever you choose to do today and for the rest of the month and your life, ensure that it’s 30 minutes long and something that you enjoy. Happy training!
